How the Numbers Work

Cost estimates use Genworth survey medians for each state and care type (home health aide, assisted living, memory care, nursing home). Annual cost = daily or monthly rate x days/months in the period. Projections apply historical care cost inflation (3-5% annually depending on care type) from the AARP index.

Data Sources

Genworth Cost of Care Survey

Annual survey of 70,000+ care providers across all 50 states and 440+ metro areas. The standard industry reference for eldercare costs by care type.

CMS Nursing Home Compare

Federal database of nursing home quality and staffing data. Used to cross-validate cost estimates and provide context on care quality indicators.

AARP Long-Term Care Cost Index

AARP's annual index tracking eldercare cost trends and inflation rates by care category and geography.

CMS Medicare and Medicaid Publications

Official coverage rules, eligibility thresholds, and reimbursement rates for federal programs.

Limitations

Costs vary significantly within states: urban facilities typically run 25-40% above state medians. Private-pay rates differ from Medicaid reimbursement rates. Memory care premiums of 20-30% above standard assisted living are common but not universal. Medicare covers skilled nursing only; long-term custodial care is not covered after a qualifying stay.

About Estimates

The numbers on this site are estimates built from published data. They're a starting point for budgeting and comparison, not a quote. Your actual cost depends on specifics no calculator can know: your vendor, your timing, your circumstances.
